How to Store Your Antique Maps

 Antique maps need special storage to keep them in a good condition. Whether you have a single map or many, you require a special care to avoid any damage. Here are some important points that you can consider to protect your old map and increase its longevity.

·      ·        Before storing maps, make sure to preserve them properly. If they required to be folded, you can buy a separate sheet and put the map in between the separate pages and then fold them. Inserting separation sheets aid avoid pages of the map from tearing and sticking while unfolding.

·        Keep an eye on the storage room to find out the evidences of the vermin at regular intervals. Pay more attention to signs of worms, rodents, book lice and silverfish. Such infections can damage the old print because vermin attracts to antique maps.

·        Insert the antique map into very firm and acid-free shallow storage boxes. These boxes and folders are designed of the cotton rag. The firmness of the sleeves of the folder helps in providing extra safety against exterior damages. 


·        Examine the old maps for mold and foxing as per the changes in climate. If antique maps show any sign of damages, restore or repair them immediately.

Ensure that you do not store the old maps with materials that are prone to be acidic. Keep telegrams, newspapers and other acidic stuffs away your maps to prevent any problem.
